Old Testament

Asshur

A son of Shem and the progenitor of the people who settled in the region of Assyria.

Asshur is listed in the Table of Nations as a son of Shem, the son of Noah. He is identified as the ancestor of the Assyrian people, a significant regional power in the ancient Near East. His inclusion in the genealogies of Genesis 10 and 1 Chronicles 1 serves to trace the post-flood expansion of humanity through the line of Shem.
