Old Testament · Major figure
Esau
The elder son of Isaac and Rebekah, twin brother of Jacob, and the progenitor of the Edomite nation.
Esau was a skilled hunter and his father's favorite, though he famously traded his birthright to his brother Jacob for a meal. His life is defined by his loss of the patriarchal blessing and his role as the father of the Edomites, who became long-standing rivals to the Israelites. Scripture uses his story to illustrate the sovereignty of God in election and the consequences of despising spiritual inheritance.
