Old Testament · Major figure
Abner
Abner was the commander of Saul's army and a key figure in the transition of power to David.
As the son of Ner and cousin to King Saul, Abner served as the commander of Israel's army and remained loyal to the house of Saul after his death. He initially supported Ish-bosheth's claim to the throne, leading to a prolonged war against the house of David. His eventual defection to David and subsequent assassination by Joab significantly altered the political landscape of early Israel.
