Old Testament · Major figure
Ishmael
The firstborn son of Abraham and Hagar, father of twelve princes and ancestor of the Ishmaelite tribes.
Ishmael was born to Abraham and Hagar, serving as the focus of God's promise to make him a great nation despite his exclusion from the covenant line of Isaac. While he was cast out into the wilderness, God remained faithful to His promise to protect and multiply his descendants. The name also refers to later individuals in the Old Testament, most notably the assassin of Gedaliah in the book of Jeremiah.
