Old Testament · Major figure

Jeroboam

The first king of the northern Kingdom of Israel who led the ten tribes into idolatry.

Jeroboam son of Nebat was appointed by God to rule over the ten northern tribes after the division of Solomon's kingdom. He is primarily defined by his establishment of golden calves at Bethel and Dan to prevent his people from returning to Jerusalem, an act Scripture repeatedly calls the sin of Jeroboam. His reign set a pattern of apostasy that characterized the northern kingdom until its eventual fall.
